IRCT President Dr Abdel Hamid Afana interviewed by the
International Review of the Red Cross In an extensive interview with the International Review of the Red Cross Dr Afana outlines his views on some of the key questions related to the rehabilitation of torture survivors and the prevention of torture. "We must understand that human beings interact with their environment, and that well-being results in a feeling of hope and altruism", says Dr Afana, adding that an oppressive political environment is damaging to both individuals and communities. "We know, too, that health professionals must have an active role in upholding basic human rights, and must join communities in their struggle to combat torture and impunity and to promote dignity and peace", Dr Afana points out in this comprehensive interview, which addresses issues such as the difference between torture and other forms of ill-treatment, various approaches to the rehabilitation of torture survivors, and the influence of torture on society as a whole.
